Shopping for an RBC7 Battery

by Geeky on January 28, 2010

Shopping for double A batteries is a fairly easy procedure, but shopping for APC batteries for your power protection systems, such as an RBC7, can be a little more complicated. The process, however, can actually be really easy if you know what to look for and what to do beforehand. By pointing out exactly what steps should be taken, we are hoping that here we have simplified the process for you.

If you are shopping for a replacement battery, it's one of those events, that can either be really really simple or a major hassle. Before you have a replacement battery shipped out to you, there are a few steps you need to take; do not just point and click.

There is no guarantee, for starters, that when you order a replacement battery, that you are actually going to receive the correct one. With the typical triple A batteries or even the 9 volts, you are guaranteed that you are going to get the same shape battery, but this is not the same with an APC battery, as there are dozens of shapes and sizes on the market.

Furthermore, manufacturers of equipment that uses RBC7 batteries are frequently known to change specifications without notice, so just know that you can't, say, rely on the specs listed on the manufacturer's website, but rather, you actually will have to take the battery out of your unit and see what the specifications are.

The biggest complaint that is received from APC battery retailers is that no matter how they try and put it in, it doesn't fit. When the wrong battery is received, it can be quite a costly event to the buyer, as not only is it their responsibility to send the wrong battery back, but you also would have to pay out in order to get the correct battery. In short, just make sure to check your RBC7's specifications before ordering a replacement or a backup.

As for when, exactly, you should replace your RBC7 battery, as a general rule, most APC batteries will last longer than one year, but not as long as two years. However, nothing is set in stone and there are many exceptions. You will find that some batteries may last longer than a year or so, whereas others may not even last a year. The rule of thumb is generally to use the warranty as a guideline, in that a replacement APC battery is guaranteed to last at least as long as the warranty. If you want to look after your ups system and have continual uninterrupted power supply, then it really is better to replace it before it expires.

Manufacturers who produce good quality batteries, if the truth were known, tend to say the battery will last longer than a year, but if it's only a one year warranty that is offered when you purchase, then you should not take the risk. Your RBC7 batteries should be replaced as soon as the warranty runs out; this is very important. You can assume that a battery will last longer than one year, but by doing this you are taking big risks, in the sense that, the only way of finding out it doesn't work is when it fails you. Do you really want to wait until this happens - I don't think so.
